A 1940s Mediterranean Revival in Hollywood Gets a Modern Makeover
The one-level corner home offers a pool with a waterfall, a cabana and original tiles, pink coral walkways, and beamed cathedral ceilings.
Carlos Schoeppl, a prolific mid-century architect along Florida’s Gold Coast, was perhaps best known for the grand yet timeless Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern (MiMo) homes he designed for wealthy clients in and around Miami Beach.
When a Schoeppl-designed one-story home from the mid-1940s came up for sale in his Hollywood, Florida, neighborhood, retired art and antiques dealer Guy Bush knew he had to act quickly.
“I walked into the living room and told the realtor, ‘I want it,’ ” Bush recalled.
And he got it, paying $955,000 for the then three-bedroom, two-bath house on Tyler Street in the desirable Hollywood Lakes neighborhood in August 2021, he said. Right away, he began to work with an architect to draw up plans for a fully renovated house, including a primary bedroom extension, a brand-new and much larger kitchen, four new bathrooms and a stylish new laundry room.
